Why the SAT Matters?

Even in a test-optional landscape, the SAT still opens doors. A strong score gives students an objective measure to stand out from the crowd.

For many top schools, "test-optional" doesn't always mean "test-ignored," and we see more and more schools going back to requiring standardized tests.

We encourage students to see the SAT not as a barrier, but as a tool—one more opportunity to show what they're capable of.

SAT preparation

In the current admissions landscape, a good SAT score is no-longer a nice to have, but a requirement. Here's why it's important:

Frequently
Asked Questions

How is your SAT prep different from a prep courses from the larger companies?
The research is pretty clear that the largest test score increases from test prep come from 1:1 tutoring. Unlike Kaplan and Princeton Review, which use cookie cutter curriculums in large group settings, we provide personalized one on one attention to all of our students to help drive meaningful score increases.
Do you assign practice tests and homework between sessions?
Yes. We assign practice tests and homework and set a plan with your student for the time leading up to the SAT to help drive the most meaningful score outcomes. We rely on a combination of existing off the shelf resources and our own proprietary resources based on what your student needs. Some existing resources are really good, so there’s no need for us to reinvent the wheel. That said, we have developed our own resources to fill critical gaps where we feel that existing resources are insufficient.
How much can my child realistically improve?
We generally see students increase by an average of around 150 points. Students with a baseline score under 1250 often see even more meaningful gains. That said, results are student driven. Coming to sessions isn’t enough — doing homework, staying consistent with prep, and being intentional about improvement is required. During our diagnostic evaluation, we can provide a general sense of what’s realistic based on your child’s academic profile, baseline score, and where they’re starting from.
Should my child take the SAT multiple times?
Yes. In general, we find that students should plan to take the test three times. That said, we want them to be prepared for each attempt. It’s critical that they go into that first exam with a really strong sense of the test and very few gaps. Taking it one or two more times can help them reach their maximum score. After that point, we want to be thoughtful about whether we’re putting more effort towards the SAT or effort towards somewhere else.
Do you help students decide between the SAT and ACT?
Yes. We do not offer resources for the ACT — we are experts in the SAT. We generally find the SAT to be a more learnable exam and the majority of students fare better on it. That said, we do recommend that students take one of each exam to start and review a concordance table. If a student finds they’re performing much better on the ACT, we can work with them to find ACT tutoring options based on our network.
What's a competitive SAT score for the schools my child is targeting?
In general, we want your student to be at or above the 75th percentile for the schools they are targeting. At the end of the day, we work with students to maximize their score and are realistic when we find that they are plateauing on the exam.
